For those who didn't get it...
When Cain said "The Black Sheep," he was doing it with VERY specific diction. (I asked if Carole could make it look capitalized; I haven't gotten a chance to see whether it was possible or not. ^^;
He's also VERY specifically using a word that could refer either to humans or to animals and NOT using the kanji for that word.
Now, in this version, Yuki Kaori claims it's common knowledge in England that the Prince Edward in this painting was commonly referred to as the Black Sheep of the family/the prodigal son/etc. (If this is actually true, no one mentioned it to me while I was there. ^^;
Cain was referring to *the picture of Prince Edward* as the point to push, and the "just like me" followed by Riff's "naruhodo" (I see/of course (I forget which way I translated that ^^;
) gave Riff the clue that he was supposed to push on the picture of the prince.
The maid, overhearing the conversation and being French and not understanding much English and not knowing the back story, pushed the *actual* black sheep, not the Black Sheep Prince Edward, and that was the trigger for the suit of armor to kill her...
...at least that's Cain's "hypothesis." ^^;;;
So does that make more sense now?

Okay, I'm no royal history expert, and I cant remember what the painting looked like in the manga, but Prince Edward, brother of King Richard the Lionheart (the one who went off to fight the crusades) was well known as 'the black prince'. It could be him.
However, the later edward prince of wales was a more likely candidate for the title 'black sheep'. Most notably, he was involved in a scandal where he was implicated as a regular customer at a boy-brothel (there seems to have been a lot of cover-up regarding this). This, however, happened in 1889, so probably a little late to fit in with the story.
So, yeah, I'm not sure who Yuki Kaori was talking about there...

In the last Hana to Yume was a yeardate but I can't remember it. I guess I have seen it on Erins homepage. Maybe it is helpful to know which person could be meant with the black sheep.
